Sleep & Life Expectancy Calculator | How Sleep Affects Lifespan | Longevity Engine

Based on the Harvard/Beth Israel 5-factor sleep study (172,321 adults) and Cappuccio meta-analysis (>1.3M adults).

Calculate how your sleep duration, nighttime awakenings, and sleep apnea affect your life expectancy and cardiovascular healthspan.

The Harvard / Beth Israel 5-factor sleep model

The sleep quality factors and longevity estimates in this calculator are based on prospective epidemiological research led by Dr. Frank Qian (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center / Harvard Medical School) and presented at the American College of Cardiology Together With the World Congress of Cardiology (published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 2023).

Analyzing 172,321 adults in the National Health Interview Survey linked to the National Death Index, the study demonstrated that adhering to all five low-risk sleep factors (ideal duration of 7-8 hours, ease of falling asleep, staying asleep, no sleep medication, and waking well-rested) was associated with a 30% reduction in cardiovascular death, a 19% reduction in cancer death, and up to +4.7 years of life expectancy for men and +2.4 years for women.

Duration curve and sleep disorder hazards

Sleep duration exhibits a classic U-shaped mortality curve documented in the landmark meta-analysis by Cappuccio et al. (Sleep, 2010; 1.38 million participants). Short sleep (<6 hours per night) carries a 12% increased risk of all-cause death (HR 1.12), while severe sleep deprivation (<5 hours) escalates cardiovascular mortality risks.

Furthermore, untreated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is modeled using data from Marin et al. (Lancet, 2005), which tracked patients over 10 years and identified an independent hazard ratio of ~1.45 to 1.63 for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.
