About the ONS national life tables
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) produces the official National Life Tables for the United Kingdom. These tables calculate period life expectancy based on death registrations across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
Period life expectancy is an estimate of the average number of additional years a person could expect to live if current age-specific mortality rates were to remain constant throughout their remaining lifetime.
Understanding the 1-in-4, 1-in-10, and centenarian odds
Because life expectancy is an average, half of all individuals will live longer than the statistical estimate. The ONS calculator highlights the 75th percentile (a 1-in-4 chance of reaching an older age) and the 90th percentile (a 1-in-10 chance of reaching an exceptional age).
For retirement and pensions planning in the UK, financial advisers frequently recommend preparing for the 1-in-4 survival age to safeguard against longevity risk.
